Issue 140498: Pepper Flash: loading fails on Gangan online

Reported by kenjibaheux@chromium.org, Aug 3 2012 Project Member

Issue description

Version: 21.0.1180.60 m
OS: Windows XP
Shockwave Flash PPAPI
Description:	Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31
Version:	11.3.31.222

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. With Pepper Flash enabled go to
 http://www.square-enix.com/jp/magazine/ganganonline/comic/aoi/viewer/010/_SWF_Window.html
2. You should see a "Loading..." animation

What is the expected output?
3. The loading eventually ends and you should be able to browse the comic

What do you see instead?
3. The loading eventually fails and an application speficic error code is displayed

Note: works fine with NPAPI. No issue on Mac Chrome 22.0.1221.0 dev with Pepper Flash (Shockwave Flash 11.3 r31 Version:	11.3.31.307).

I will try to get a contact at Gangan Online but that might take a while.

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.

Note:
 - could not reproduce on Windows 7 and Windows 8.
 - double checked on Windows XP and it does reproduce 100% (IE6 on the same machine worked fine)

I am lowering down the priority on this one given that it seems to only happen on Windows XP and not on all the comics available on the website.

I have reached out to someone at square enix / gangan online.

Square Enix got back to me: they are in touch with the comics player vendor to find out the root cause of Error 6 (which happens when the loading of thumbnails fail).

Temporarily assigning myself until we know more.

This is due to path names that exceed the Windows maximum path length (260 chars).

When writing LSO's Flash tries to use the URL of the swf as part of the path. This, combined with a long default profile directory on Windows XP causes us to exceed the maximum. e.g. the LSO is stored at: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot\#SharedObjects\5UVSCFT5\www.square-enix.com\jp\magazine\ganganonline\comic\aoi\viewer\010\ActiBook.swf\...

This bug also reproduces on Windows 7 if the profile directory is long enough (the default one isn't).

I've checked the Pepper file API and it's doing the right thing in this case (i.e. returning an error because it can't create the directory).

I tested the behavior of NPAPI flash to see what it would do if it were given a long enough URL. In this case, it no longer uses the full URL, instead using a hash of the sub-components as the name, e.g. the directory becomes ...\#SharedObjects\5UVSCFT5\www.square-enix.com\##DC725F070C6D32EF\...

I'm not sure why we're not triggering this behavior yet.

Thanks!
I will reach back Square Enix.

Is this a "somewhat trivial change"? Any chance for merging back to M21?

I might be off-base but it seems that the conditions required to trigger the bug are easily met on Windows XP and I am not sure we can safely ignore the issue on Windows 7 or Vista:

 - Sure, with an identical username, the length of the Pepper Flash shared objects base directory* is 35 characters shorter on Windows 7 than on Windows XP.
 - However, given that the whole path of the SWF appears in the final path (AFAICT), I am not sure that this make a significant difference in the end.

(* something like c:[app_path]\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot\#SharedObjects\[A-Z0-9]{8})

If this is a non-trivial change, we could try to deep dive and find reports of important websites affected in other countries.

For Japan, we already know that this is also breaking Nicovideo (Tier-1 website) for Windows XP users ( crbug.com/140570 )

Comment 13 by raymes@chromium.org, Aug 20 2012

The fix is fairly simple but I'm not sure how much we're merging to 21 at this stage given how close 22 is. I'll check with brettw/viettrungluu tomorrow.

Comment 14 by raymes@chromium.org, Aug 21 2012

Trung said that he will merge this to 21.

Comment 16 by kenjibaheux@chromium.org, Aug 29 2012

Did we merge this to M21?

Comment 17 by raymes@chromium.org, Aug 29 2012

It will go out in the next m21 update.

As per the release notes we see the issue got fixed in 21.0.1180.89 for Linux, Mac, Windows and Chrome Frame.

We have another defect "143674: LocalSharedObject file is not created" which was marked as duplicated to this - We verified with the build 21.0.1180.89, and still we see the issue.

Steps to reproduce:
- Create an account on "https://eu99.spreed.com/checkin/enter/register" and login
- Create a new meeting (settings don't matter)
- Join the meeting and switch to "Screensharing" tab on the bottom
- A .lso file should be created

For me, only these subfolders are created (and no files inside):
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\User\Lokale Einstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Pepper Data\Shockwave Flash\WritableRoot\#SharedObjects\QYVRQD67\eu99.spreed.com\2.7.26\scdnv\1980000000000000#

Are you sure it is the same issue? I can't reproduce it. It might be this issue instead: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=146951. Could you test it on the Canary version of Chrome and let me know what you see. Thanks
