Issue 138312: Duplex Printing defaults to Yes, which prints extra pages even for a 1 page print out.

Reported by dwkooy...@gmail.com, Jul 20 2012

Issue description

Chrome Version : 22.0.1207.1
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
URLs (if applicable) :
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Safari 5:
Firefox 4.x:
IE 7/8/9:

What steps will reproduce the problem?

I have a Dell Printer that can not print on both sides, but you *can* print on both sides if you print the odd pages first, then re-run the pages for the second page (i.e. a manual duplex).

When Chrome first starts, it apparently defaults the duplex printing to "yes", even though I don't want it to.

When printing (even one page), it prints an "instruction page" to take the pile of papers and put them back in the printer to print the other side. For one page printouts, this is a waste of paper (the instruction page is printed). For most of my other printing, I don't want it to be duplex, but it is *nice* to have the option to turn it on WHEN I WANT IT ON.

It would be *nice* if there was an option to set the duplex printing to be on or off by default.

What is the expected result?

Do not default duplex printing unless enabled in settings.

What happens instead?

Duplex printing is on by default and I get wasted paper (the instruction sheet) for a one page print out.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

UserAgentString: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1207.1 Safari/537.1

Findings: You can change your settings using 'Printing using system dialog' by clicking Ctrl+P. You will be directed to Print -> Preferences where you can set Duplex: Off. Let us know if that helps.

Comment 2 by heather....@gmail.com, Aug 3 2012

All of my settings (including the above) have duplex or double sided printing off this still reverts when chrome is restarted

Comment 3 by Deleted ...@, Aug 3 2012

This has also just started happening to two of our systems today - never before - and cannot change it unless unmarking 'two sided printing' - it has defaulted to 'two sided printing' and cannot be changed for default

Comment 4 by Deleted ...@, Aug 5 2012

This has started happening to me just this week

Comment 5 by Deleted ...@, Aug 6 2012

Same issue for me. My default paper is legal but chrome defaults me to letter size as well as the duplex printing. I can temporarily turn off duplex but I want it off at start-up. Can't even temporarily change the paper size!

Comment 6 by bro...@prucalhomes.com, Aug 6 2012

Same problem here, this has been happening since last week, I have gotten over 30+ calls now about it. When people go to print, it is set to duplex by default. This setting should not be default.

Comment 7 by gman@google.com, Aug 7 2012

This wasted paper for me too. The default on my system is single sided printing. I'm not in the habit of checking so I print only to find that labels have been printed double sided (as in that paper I useless and I have to print again)

Please let us set it a default or preferably at least make the default the same as our system's default.

Comment 8 by heather....@gmail.com, Aug 7 2012

This doesn't work as a permanent solution

Hey Rob, I think this and issue 140826 are side effects of the print UI changes in M21. Can you take a look at it?

I've been having this same problem for since Saturday - all my printing and printer defaults are set to one sided - when I print off an email attachment from gmail it overrides everything and sets two sided as the default. We need to be able to save the printer settings. Huge waste of paper and toner. Please fix!!

The fix should be in the next Canary build.

Requesting merge to 21 since this is one of our top user issues.

Similar issue. Using Chrome version 21.0.1180.77. Defaults to two-sided even though the default printer preferences is not two-sided.

Comment 21 by ddorj...@gmail.com, Aug 14 2012

Chrome just updated today to .79 version. Problem still exists. Duplex printing HAS BEEN turned off through my printer preferences. Driving me crazy!

When will this be released?

Related issue, you can't change/save the default printer. Every time I try to print, it defaults to "SAVE AS PDF" rather than the windows default printer that I want to us, and then you have to change it.

When I do switch to the correct printer, the default is "print two sided" which is the same issue mentioned here.

Comment 32 by shaw...@rightstuf.com, Aug 16 2012

I note this is marked as "Fixed" so please advise if the issue I mentioned is also fixed or if I should file a new bug report for that.

Comment 33 by abodenha@chromium.org, Aug 16 2012

The fix will go live with the next update. I don't have a date to share.

Shawnek@ I don't think the issue you're seeing is related. Please test in a Canary build (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/chromesxs/) and if it's broken there as well please file a new bug. Please include OS, version of Chrome, and number/types of printer(s) you have connected. Thanks.

Comment 34 by jccanali...@dixonvalve.com, Aug 16 2012

Will it be a month, a week, a year?

Verified the issue on Build no : 21.0.1180.81. The option"Print on both sites of the paper" is not the default option

Comment 36 by Deleted ...@, Aug 17 2012

This problem stinks. It's driving me nuts. It's wasting all kinds of paper and time.

Comment 37 by Deleted ...@, Aug 17 2012

I cant believe that this was released. What kind of QA ido you have ??

Comment 38 by travelin...@gmail.com, Aug 18 2012

This is not just a paper usage issue, it is a convenience and time issue. We all have to stop and go into the Chrome print setting and de-select two sided printing in order to get Chrome to print on our printers. The fix needs to be rolled out NOW.

Comment 39 by skyway72...@yahoo.com, Aug 19 2012

Gosh. Please escalate this bug. It is wreaking havoc in my business work. We have had to go back to FireFox to avoid this mess. In addition to turning off the two-sided default check mark, don't forget to turn off the headers & footers check mark as well. It is just as bad, if not worse, because it messes up all of our formal documents.

Comment 40 by Deleted ...@, Aug 19 2012

I am about to switch back to IE which I HATE, however this printer issue is driving me crazy. I have younger kids that, while they know how to print, don't know how to print 2 sided on my single sided printer. I agree with others that this fix needs to be rolled out NOW. Very frustrating.

Comment 41 by peterson...@gmail.com, Aug 20 2012

Needs a quick fix.

Comment 42 by seanmhol...@gmail.com, Aug 20 2012

FIX IT!!!!!

Comment 43 by ericleec...@gmail.com, Aug 20 2012

I know this issue is really frustrating, but let's calm down and be realistic. They have identified the error and it's slated for an upcoming release (build 21.0.1180.81). They're addressing the issue. Threatening and complaining won't move this forward any faster -- just star the issue as that's the metric that will get their attention.

Comment 46 by jax...@gmail.com, Aug 20 2012

thanks for working on this issue

Comment 47 by Deleted ...@, Aug 21 2012

I have the converse problem. Chrome will not recognize duplex printing - I have to switch to using the System Dialog to print.

Sometime back in June this functionality failed.

I think there is a deeper problem than just defaulting to Duplex. My gut tells me there is a deeper problem with Chrome not picking up the default printer metrics.

I have to admit I'm also bugged by the transient appearance and then disappearance of the two sided and other options as the print window open. They disappear as the printed page renders. I'll submit as a seperate problem report.

Comment 48 by chris.fi...@gmail.com, Aug 21 2012

I believe that everyone is now fully aware that the duplex issue needs to
be fixed. Reiterating the same thing over and over is a bit redundant.

Workaround: Uncheck the box when you print. It only takes about 2 times
until you remember, oh yeah....the two-sided thing...I better uncheck that.
Goosefraba people.
