Chrome 20 Rendering Issues

Version 20 introduces a ton of visual artifacts, incorrect rendering and often a lack of highlight when selecting text.

      Chromium 18.0.1025.151: OK for both
      Firefox 13.0.1: OK for both

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go to the URLs above
2. In the XDA one, scroll the text in the Changelogs section (either with mouse scrool wheel or with the scroll band on the right)
3. In the DSK Bank one, observe the menu on the left

What is the expected result?
XDA - The text should scroll normally and the scrollbar should update its position.
DSK - Menu on the left should be readable

What happens instead?
XDA - The text scrolls in a limited area, leaving artifacts below and above. The scroll bar does not update (always shows top-left).
DSK - The menu on the left has headings which are unreadable. There is some white above the promo 1, 2, 3, 4 which overlaps the text.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

Attaching screenshots of both sites under Chrome 20 (where the rendering is broken), and Chromium 18 (where they look good), on the same Xubuntu 12.04 x64 system. Kernel 3.2.0-26-generic.

Forgot to mention: AMD Radeon HD 6850 with standard Xubuntu window management (xfwm), no Compiz.
Unable to reproduce with 20.0.1190.0 Canary on Windows. Looks like a Linux-only issue, somebody should test OS X to make sure.

Youtube and other sites shows bad artifacts - was fine with Google Chrome up to 19, only started with 20. Fine with Firefox 13.

Same issue. Ubuntu 12.04 using Compiz and a Radeon 6850. Chrome 19 is perfect, but since upgrading the 20 this has happened. A friend of mine with a similar setup (OS & GFX) has the same issue.

The only difference between these two screenshots was that I swapped tabs in between. The page content is the same.

Cannot go fullscreen on any flash video.
Ubuntu 12.04 x64 system. Kernel 3.2.0-26-generic

Unable to play any fullscreen flash video, also flash video playback speed increased. 
Unable to play any song on Grooveshark (sometimes it returns an error, others playback speed is also increased).

Disabling PepperFlash (11.3 r31) solved these issues. Now using /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so (11.2 r202)

Thanks for the advice :)

Renaming the PepperFlash directory didn't solve it for me - Flash simply broke. What solved it is the solution from http://www.spinics.net/linux/fedora/fedora-users/msg419702.html - go into chrome://plugins, click Details and disable PepperFlash.

@zmo -- another smattering of misc. Linux configurations with compositor issues. I don't know if anything particularly relevant changed in M20. As much as it sucks, if these are all specific to odd Linux configurations I'd rather blacklist than investigate-- the compositor folks need to focus on getting FCM and the thread on for Win8 & Mac right now.

brutimus: what's the issue you encountered? Steps to reproduce?
version 19 comes with Software accelerated Canvas, Compositing, 3D CSS, CSS Animation, WebGL by default on Intel GM45 chipset. If i enable Hardware acceleration (Override software rendering list), it still works fine, no issues we see here.

version 20 comes with Hardware accelerated Canvas, Compositing, 3D CSS, CSS Animation, WebGL by default on Intel GM45 chipset, and is obviously not working correctly.

I see very similar corruption on YouTube pages. Often, a window maximize/restore will fix the issue.

There are likely newer AMD drivers. I'll report back after I upgrade.

I have similar problems with corruption on previously said pages running Google Chrome on openSUSE 12.1.

I have further issues with embedded panes requiring mouse roll over on thumbnails to change content like what is found on www.theage.com.au or www.nba.com. They fail to behave as expected and either do not change content display on rollover or may change with corrupted output.

In the meantime, is there any commandline or about:flags workaround?
I have just updated AMD driver to the version 8.98 and so far it seems that everything works OK. If I find a problem, I'll let you know.

Hey where did you get 8.98?  The latest driver on AMD's site provides 8.97.100.3: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx

That's bizarre.  I guess I'll go ahead and install it, maybe the installer is reporting the wrong version: "Uncompressing AMD Catalyst(TM) Proprietary Driver-8.97.100.3"
Since I have a HD 4000 Series I can not use the driver at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx  I have to use the one at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeon_linux.aspx  I installed it. It is supposed to be at revision 12.6, but the latest legacy driver still has problems.

According to Catalyst Control center its version is 8.97.100.3-120703a-143048C-ATI.
I can confirm 8.98 appears to have resolved the issue but now CSS acceleration is reported as disabled on the command line when it wasn't before.
 

I was on 8.96.7 before this. I also just downloaded it from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx and get this in terminal:

sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/precise
Created directory fglrx-install.R5NTBo
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

Er.. disregard my initial confusion.  There is a *slight* difference in URLs -- "legacy" vs non-legacy.  The legacy ones seem to be lagging behind a version.

Furthermore.. It seems the non-legacy driver won't load for cards that their site claims needs the legacy drivers. :-)  Thought I'd give it a shot anyways.  Hopefully they'll bump legacy up to 8.98 soon!

I have the issues described at http://www.ubuntuvibes.com/2012/07/how-to-fix-rendering-issues-in-google.html and the fix (disabling PepperFlash) worked for me.  

Here is my about://gpu.  I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 with Ubuntu's version of the drivers.  I haven't updated because the proprietary drivers cause other issues.

jclark42796: I think yours might be a different issue.  It looks like your driver is pretty old (2009).  Could you try to update your driver, and see if it fixes the issue?

Installed latest NVIDIA drivers, that seemed to fix things.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I have to remember not to believe Windows when it tells me my drivers are up to date.

jclark42796: thanks for letting us know.  It seems like we need to tighten up our blacklisting to cover your old driver.
This is another case where popping an infobar or something telling users
they have blacklisted but upgradeable drivers would help. I don't know
quite how we'd want to do it (an infobar on every page is way too
annoying), but I want more and more to do this.

On Linux, such a notification wouldn't be actionable for the majority of
users who just get their updates from their distributions stable repository.
I have a Radeon HD 3450 with driver version 8.96.7-120312a-135598C-ATI (packaged with Ubuntu)

Issue manifests and workaround by disabling PepperFlash works.

Actually, I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but there is another problem with rendering that appeared in, I think, 22.

Try opening Kickstarter main page: http://www.kickstarter.com/
Scroll down to Popular and try clicking on the ">" to show the next 4 projects.
Visually nothing changes, though the scrolling to the side actually happened - clicking will take you to other projects.

This is still heppening AFTER disabling PepperFlash.
I do have the same issue with kickstarter. Changing the tab to any other tab and than back to the kickstarter tab actually shows the updated website.
I have had this issue with other websites as well, including hulu.com, foursquare.com, dictionary.reference.com and live365.com.

Not all issues are solved by that configuration.

I was having rendering issues with my AMD Radeon HD 6450:
 - Kickstarter popular block would not scroll (http://www.kickstarter.com/)
 - Instagram photos had large white blocks on them (http://instagram.com/p/QyUai0TKOh/)
 - Cricinfo, upon showing the Chrome Extension tip at the top of the page, would split the page 2 inches in from the right side of the screen. (Only the left part would move down). (http://www.espncricinfo.com/)

I removed my current AMD driver and all the above rendering issues were fixed.
After installing the latest driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx everything is still fixed, and I get WebGL and dual monitor support back.

Summary: Install latest driver to fix the rendering issues :)

See attached for what kickstarter looks like for me. PepperFlash is disabled already, and the GPU compositing fix mentioned in comment 51 doesn't fix my problems. 

Unfortunately the AMD Radeon HD 3450 is not supported in the 12.8 (8.98) driver version. Has anyone managed to solve these problems on a similar card?

vangelis@chromium.org: I also experience issues with this page, also have HD 3450 which is incompatible with newer drivers.

Strangely enough, when I try to disable compositing via about:flags it does not help, but the switch you mentioned helped.

Is it possible to configure it in about:flags? Maybe I'm doing it wrong. "GPU compositing on all pages" is set to disabled.

Older versions that 8.98 of AMD's proprietary Linux driver were blacklisted in Chrome some time ago. See https://chromiumcodereview.appspot.com/10829025/ . You should upgrade your graphics driver.

It is impossible for some of the older graphics cards, unfortunately.

If it was blacklisted, would that mean that accelerated compositing should not enable? Because apparently it does unless you force it off.

Confirm bug on Ubuntu 12.04 x64 with ATI driver 8.96.4 for an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 card using Chrome Stable 22.0.1229.94.

Confirm that using about:flags to disable accelerated compositing does not mitigate bug.

Confirm that launching via 'google-chrome --disable-accelerated-compositing' does mitigate the bug.

I'd suggest there's a problem with both the automated blacklist and the about:flags switch.


Thanks for confirming.  The about:flags switch is different from --disable-accelerated-compositing. By enabling "GPU compositing on all pages" in about:flags you're only telling the browser to use the GPU for every page, even if the page itself doesn't require it.  By setting the flag to "Disabled", you still get GPU acceleration for pages that have Flash, certain types of CSS animations, video, etc. The --disable-accelerated-compositing command line flag block all accelerated compositing, regardless of the content.

 
I have same issue with Chrome22. It appears when click on the slide (left or right) button. Must to disable the PepperFlash plugin to fix them.

My pc: Win 7 64Bit (Build 7600), Ati Radeon HD 4600 Series
I just have a solution for this issue, not sure why but if we remove the flash Param: "wmode", "transparent". The issue not appear again.

Fix lexical driver version comparison issue in GPU blacklisting.

We made the wrong assumption that AMD linux drivers only use the format of major.minor, where minor version uses lexical ordering.  However, sometimes they may have more details than just major/minor version.

Also, no longer use Version in base/ because it does not accept version number with leading 0s.  Implement our own version comparison op.

@ son.c.to : similar to #59, your driver version should have been blacklisted but due to a bug, our blacklist wasn't taking effect. This should be fixed with the next dev channel release.  In the meantime either updating your driver or running chrome with --disable-accelerated-compositing should help.

I can confirm that with Chrome Version 24.0.1312.1 dev kickstarter renders fine with Ubuntu 12.04 and the AMD propertary driver from the repository.

@karmo.rosental : assuming that FGLRX refers to the version of the driver then the issue should be fixed for you in Chrome 24 (dev channel and soon to be beta). I am having the same rendering issues and slow performance here, especially in "kiosk" mode. Does anyone have a stable combination of Ubuntu 12.04, Chrome(Chromium) and ATI drivers for Radeon HD 6310? I have tried countless combinations, I either lose GPU support or get rendering issues. Was NOT a problem on Ubuntu 10.04 (which I cannot downgrade to). Also, whats the status of 2D canvas acceleration? This was also working in 10.04 but no longer...

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

I am having the same issues in the URLS posted by the original reporter; also issues in other pages, like when scrolling down my news feed at www.facebook.com, the menu bar intermittently reappears at the top while scrolling, then if I scroll back up there are corrupted copies of the menu bar everywhere it appeared on the way down.

I have the artifacts in video playback issue with Chrome Version 24.0.1312.52 on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. Disabling PepperFlash fixes some, but not all videos.  Videos still showing artifacts play fine in Firefox.
