Kernel panic on 2012 Macbook Airs
Project Member Reported by tony@chromium.org, Jun 21 2012 Back to list
From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034535?start=15&tstart=0

The report doesn't have a symbolized backtrace. I'm not sure what the next step is here.

I've seen crashes related to AppleIntelHD4000Graphics on our server. Will dig them up and report back.

Everything from AppleIntelHD4000Graphics is from 11E2620, meaning the new retina MBP, so likely unrelated. Will see if I can make sense of the kernel dumps.

I think 11E2705 is the new MBAs, but nothing conclusive on our server. The thread you linked to has this as a panic:

This are the Links from the merged (and duplicated) bug-report to a couple of entrys in Apples support forum. As a sidenote: i had the same problems with chrome, but could not track a reproducible pattern

Can anyone who encounter this provide the content of about:gpu page? I suspect it's related with running out of vram.
My about:gpu is below. Judging that the crashes happend for me when playing videos (not in Chrome however) the hypothesis seems reasonable.

Thanks. I can reproduce kernel panic on 10.8 when running out vram. On 10.7.4, so far I haven't been able to reproduce with AMD gpu, but I haven't tested with an Intel yet.

File a bug with Apple using the reproduction steps you have, then we can note the radar number here and call it an ExternalDependency. http://bugreporter.apple.com/ .
Issue 134646 has been merged into this issue.
Comment 14 by kbr@chromium.org, Jun 26 2012
The 10.8 kernel panic is a different issue and has already been filed with Apple as Radar 11621819.

I think we need a new Radar filed about these crashes in the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver. This chip is common between the 2012 MacBook Air and the integrated GPU in the Retina Display MacBook Pros.

The tech press thinks we're to blame for apple's kernel bugs: http://gizmodo.com/5921609/new-macbook-air-crashing-blame-google-chrome-probably
Ken: can you handle filing the Radar (nothing zmo@'s repro)? I'm not an expert in this area, otherwise I would. Once that's done, I can pass on the two rdar numbers to our contacts.

Blacklist seems good as a stop-gap. Would obviously still be good to get the driver issue properly filed with Apple as well.

So we blakclist Intel HD 4000 on Mac.

Note that we have to fix crbug 122430, otherwise, with this blacklisting, we will lose flash.

So the ToT should never roll to this revision. This is for merging back to M20 only. Once I commit this, I'll revert it immediately.

Filed:

Kernel panics in Intel HD 4000 Graphics driver
rdar://problem/11762608

We've reproduced this in house and it looks like it's caused by exhausting VRAM. A GPU resource leak related to Flash is currently being investigated with high priority under Issue 133885. That's probably the reason we're exhausting VRAM and triggering the kernel panic.

peter.wagenet@ could you please help us understand if you are seeing issue when you try latest chrome canary? thank you!
I haven't seen it with very much frequency, but I'll pass this along to a friend who has had more regular issues.

Dunno if this is related, but starting today I've seen two weird crashes on my Mac Pro with a bunch of "_CGSLockWindow: cannot synchronize window backing store" issues; it looks like CG is crashing and logging me out of my user account, but the machine isn't actually rebooting (i.e., it's not a kernel crash). I've never seen a mac do this before. This is with 20.0.1132.43 with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.
Comment 31 by jglov...@gmail.com, Jun 29 2012
I also am on a brand new 2012 Macbook Air (with 8GB and 500GB storage) and started getting this kernel panic yesterday.

Happened 4 times total, all while running Chrome, and seemed to be while either watching video, or using pages with flash content (I think the fourth time it happened I was using Google Analytics).

After the third crash yesterday I did a bunch of research and found all the threads on Apple support forums and a few of the ones over here. A handful of posters were suggesting that Canary users aren't getting the issue, so I downloaded and installed Canary.

It was while using Canary that I experienced the 4th panic, so I'm assuming Canary isn't immune to the issue either.

Here's the crash log after the 4th crash:

jglovier@ could you please try 21.0.1180.15 or 22.0.1132.47? We have a temporary workaround for the issue.

Also blacklist Core Animation on Macbook Pros.

These machines have NVIDIA GeFornce GT 650 + Intel HD 4000.

Intel HD 4000 causes the panic with flash leaking, and since we run flash on the integrated Intel GPU, we need to blacklist Core Amination on these machines until the leak is fixed.

Issue 135390 has been merged into this issue.
It's been happening on my Mid 2010 17" MBP 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB.

I'll try to force the crash and update this ticket with the info, but this is how it looks like: http://www.dropmocks.com/mBjm5p
I'm afraid to report that I'm still experiencing this after updating to 20.0.1132.47 last week which, as I understand it, should prevent GPU acceleration being used with the Intel HD 4000. I'm using a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 15" (non-retina).

Crash log below shows current thread as Google Chrome and Intel HD 4000 at top of extension backtrace.

Two updates:

1) The GPU resource leak in the Flash plugin has been identified and fixed per Issue 133885. Deployment of that fix is still in progress.

2) We have heard through the grapevine that a fix for the underlying kernel panic in OS X is underway.

I am not 100% sure that the fix for the resource leak would work around all of the problems seen, given Comment 36 above, but it sounds like the underlying fix is coming.

People affected are encouraged to try Chrome Canary, which now uses Pepper Flash by default. This version of Flash uses a completely different rendering mechanism than Core Animation, and is not subject to this GPU resource leak.

Still have the problem with 2012 MacBook Air. Using Version 22.0.1202.0 canary

Been trying out most of the canary builds and they all still seem to crash the system.

Anyone seeing this problem on the affected hardware with Canary: do you have a set of sites that provoke the problem at least somewhat reliably? If so could you please post reproduction steps here?

Comment 40 by dav...@gmail.com, Jul 18 2012
I've seen this kernel panic 3 times on my Retina Macbook Pro running "Version 22.0.1209.0 canary". It happens pretty randomly, and I don't have any steps to reproduce. Clearly not a Chrome bug, but just FYI that the current Canary is still triggering it.
Comment 41 by Deleted ...@, Jul 19 2012
Hi, I have a question: has the kernel panic issue actually been fixed on newer builds of Chrome, or is it just "fixed" in the sense that the 2012 Macbooks have Chrome's GPU acceleration turned off by default?

I ask because I'm on a 2012 Macbook Air with Chrome Version 22.0.1207.1 dev, and I have the following situation:

With about:flags "GPU compositing on all pages" set to default, I have choppy scrolling but no kernel panics.
With the above setting switched to enabled, I have smooth scrolling but kernel panics every few hours.

Does this mean that the issue still exists in the underlying driver, and I have to wait for Apple/Intel to fix it? Is there any way to get smooth scrolling on 2012 Macbooks in Chrome without jeopardizing stability?
Comment 42 by kbr@chromium.org, Jul 19 2012
Apple has indicated to us that a fix for the kernel panic has been identified, but the fix has not yet been released via Software Update. I don't know when it is planned to be released.

The workarounds currently in Chrome disable all GPU functionality on the affected machines in an attempt to avoid triggering this bug in OS X.

You *may* be able to work around this bug without losing all GPU functionality in Chrome by disabling "Automatic graphics switching" in the Energy Saver control panel. I haven't verified this myself, so try at your own risk.

Comment 43 by Deleted ...@, Jul 19 2012
Thanks for the reply!

I'm on a Macbook Air, so there's no graphics switching for me. I guess I'll continue to live with choppy scrolling until Apple releases the fix for the kernel panic.
Issue 138787 has been merged into this issue.
Comment 45 by skim...@gmail.com, Jul 29 2012
I reported in Issue 134286 that there is a new firmware update for MacBook Pro Retina and MacBook Air (mid 2012) that fixes several sleep/wake issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro Retina and MacBook Air (Mid 2012) computers and is recommended for all users running OS X v10.7.4.

Here's the Apple KB link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5394

Hopefully, this will resolve the kernel panic issue.

Luckily, the kernel panics don't appear to be happening for me in Chrome 22.0.1220.0 canary on Mountain Lion. Apple must have fixed that bug.

Enhance GPU blacklist so we can also blacklist GPUs other than the primary one.

For example, on Macbook, we can blacklist Intel HD 4000 whether it is the only GPU on the machine, or it is the integrated one of a dual GPU setting.

Blacklist all GPU access on Lion with Intel HD 4000.

We have to do this to avoid potential kernel panic. Will remove this entry once Apple fixes the issue and pushes the updates to users.

I'm fairly sure this is related to the bug, but I get a reliable complete system crash when attempting to use flash on www.airtime.com with current Mountain Lion release and Canary 22.0.1223.0. If needed, I will post any logs requested.
Comment 53 by kbr@chromium.org, Aug 1 2012
@tim: yes, please file a bug with Apple at http://bugreporter.apple.com and also post any system crash logs here.

Comment 54 by t...@airtime.com, Aug 1 2012
The system doesn't actually crash but locks up completely and must be hard rebooted. The only thing in the logs seems to be this repeatedly:

Comment 55 by kbr@chromium.org, Aug 1 2012
@tim: please file a new bug at http://new.crbug.com/ . The problem you're encountering is not the same as the one described in this report.

Also, please file the bug with Apple.

Is there anyone who can reproduce this issue (i.e. the kernel panics happen fairly often) and would be willing to potentially test out an OSX seed that might fix the problem?
Comment 57 by Deleted ...@, Aug 21 2012
Hi Wiltzius@chromium.org, I'm experiencing it fairly often (once or twice a day, minimum) and would be willing to test out an OSX seed. Let me know what info you need and I'll shoot it over.

I'm getting this error reported (and hence no hardware acceleration) on my Macbook Pro which doesn't have an Intel HD 4000.

owencm: your Mac is has two GPUs. Look at the about:gpu page, GPU1.

@owencm: the Retina Display MBP does have an Intel HD 4000 GPU, as the integrated GPU. Click "System Report", "Graphics/Displays".
