Issue description

OS Version:Windows 7 SP1,64 bit
Exact GPU vendor/model:Intel(R) HD Graphics Family,AMD Radeon HD 6630M

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.enable GPU compositing on all pages ,GPU Accelerated SVG and CSS Filters flags on Hybrid Graphics system
2.Select high-performance in GPU control panel
3.browse any site

What is the expected result?
site will be rendered as usual

What happens instead?
black screen appears.

Please provide any additional information. Attach a screenshot if
possible.

My pc is Sony Vaio C.this problem only occures when set Hygrid Graphics enabled and chrome set to high-performance mode.(which means chrome will have access to my dedicated AMD GPU along with intel graphics).

Debugging a little bit with a machine that has this problem (Samsung Series 7 with a AMD Radeon 6490M / Intel ID and "switchable graphics" per application binary).

I see some notes in the about:gpu log that may be of interest for the image transport failure theory:

[4808:4988:719663:ERROR:gl_surface_egl.cc(330)] : eglCreatePbufferSurface failed with error EGL_BAD_ATTRIBUTE

Also note that as reported elsewhere the szVendorID is 0x8086 (Intel) and szDeviceID is 0x0116 which is the Intel HD 3000, but the szManufacturer is "Advanced Micro Devices".

Also the device info collection fails, unclear if that's related though.
Tried poking at Chrome with Process Explorer but I can't figure out which process belongs to which GPU (was hoping to confirm that the GPU process and browser process were on different GPUs).

Chrome 18.0.1025.142 beta-m. Chrome.exe, Switchable Graphics = High Performance

I just tried updating the drivers, but that didn't help.

The steps from issue 106438 don't seem to let us detect AMD's system. EnumDisplayDevices doesn't list the AMD card, and GetAdapterIdentifier from both the browser and GPU process says they're on the Intel card. Also, there doesn't seem to be a convenient shim dll that we could detect, like for optimus.

We can maybe check whether the vendor is 0x8086 and has a driver provided by AMD or ATI. Currently we only determine the manufacturer in the GPU process, which isn't great, but we could probably do that through setupapi instead.

Unfortunately, no clue as to what's broken in the system. Traces look fine, at least.

Reading the registry to determine the driver manufacturer and then disabling the image transport surface seems to work. It probably makes the most sense to just do that for now, and get AMD's help to determine what's wrong.
I get the issue as well, but only a on select pages. Google Maps seems to be always affected, while Youtube loads a black page on random videos. Curiously, in Youtube, even the context menu is blocked by the black overlay. The Webkit circle link in the beginning also loads to a black page.

My computer is an Asus K53TA, with an AMD A4 Fusion APU. Chrome is set to use the high-performance graphics core, a Radeon HD 6650. Setting the core to the on-die one doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Hmm, I can't figure a way to determine whether a machine has switchable graphics with an AMD APU as well.
I just checked the specifications of the line on the Asus webpage.

On another note, enabling GPU-acceleration on all webpages turned them all black, but disabling it allowed me to use Maps, at the very least, accompanied by a message saying I was reverted to Classic due to a crash. It would appear that WebGL is at least partly to blame.

Comment 40 by Deleted ...@, Apr 3 2012

I have exactly the same problem. HP Pavilion dv7 with switchable graphics card: Intel HD / Radeon HD 6770 M.
I cannot open web sites like www.virustotal.com and www.mywot.com
me too, i have the same problem with the same laptop ( HP Pavilion dv7 with
switchable graphics card: Intel HD / Radeon HD 6770 M. )

with my little knowkedge,i would like to suggest you to run some games/Other applications and debug them how they works.Because everything else except chrome works juts fine.Maybe you can get some clue from game like Unreal Tournament 3.Even IE works just fine.
Issue 119685 has been merged into this issue.
Issue 117342 has been merged into this issue.
Ok, as of http://crrev.com/130496, chrome 18 will disable the image transport surface for all systems with AMD cards, which should fix this. I'll need to check in the patch for chrome 19 and 20. I'm still looking to see if there's a way to detect hybrid graphics specifically and only disable it on those systems.

@ jbau
disabling the image transport surface is not enough to fix black screen on AMD. There is the need to add --disable-gpu-sandbox as well.
Yes, I didn't mention it, but the code does --reduce-gpu-sandbox, which is necessary when you disable the image transport surface.

Comment 51 by levi...@gmail.com, Apr 4 2012

@jbau
I have tried it. --reduce-gpu-sandbox doesn't fix the problem (comment #26).
You tried "--reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface" and it didn't work?

Comment 53 by levi...@gmail.com, Apr 4 2012

@ jbau
No, it didn't. Only --disable-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface did.
I tried --reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface and everything works fine. (I had the same problem like every other person here)

Looks like we've got two problems here.
Why i have to disable-image-transport-**surface, and chromium does not fix
the bug, many people have the same problems!

Comment 56 by levi...@gmail.com, Apr 4 2012

@ jbau, @ Kurtextrem
You were right. I tested it again. --reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface Work fine with no black screens.:-)

However, now I switched it to High Power and the morphing cubes still work, with AMD acceleration! about:gpu seems to suggest that I accelerate everything I can, nothing turned off in about:flags, and it's via the AMD chip, Radeon Graphics HD 7670M.

As far as I can say, the bug is fixed.

Comment 60 Deleted

I updated my copy as well, and the Morphing Cube animation works fine so far. Acceleration enabled on all pages, and my AMD Fusion A4 is working fine.

Seconding fixed status.

@ vange
What exactly was the fix in 18.0.1025.151? Has Chromium just added --reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface as a temporary fix until a final fix ?
Labels: Hotlist-Japan
Seeing reports from JP picking up on this => hotlist-Japan for tracking purpose.
Let me know if I can help.
levilan@ : yes, essentially that's what we did, but only for AMD GPUs.

kenjubheaux@ : This issue should be fixed with the latest stable push (18.0.1025.151). Please let me know if we're still getting reports of it.

Comment 66 by levi...@gmail.com, Apr 6 2012

vangelis@

Thanks.
Will this get pushed into the dev channel? I also use an HP Pavilion dv6t and have this problem. In the meantime, I'll update the start up flags.
Labels: -Mstone-18 -Merge-Approved Mstone-19 Merge-Requested
I haven't had a chance to merge it into Chrome 19 yet. Requesting permission now.
A dev channel from Trunk will happen in the next 24-48 hours, lets what until the change has baked there before attempting to land on the branch. If speed is of the essence, for verification purposes, the change should be available on the Canary.
laforge - why was the fix I checked in to M18 reverted? Were there issues with it?

Comment 73 by kareng@google.com, Apr 9 2012

just cause it had a dependency on another CL we had to revert. we will fix it again in the next build :)
The issue seems to have resurfaced. Attaching version and GPU info again:

Hi,
I've a Dell laptop running Windows 7 - 64 bit. The processor is Intel Corei5.

I've the black screen problem on some of the sites. It started about 2-3 weeks ago.

The sites in this thread also result in a black screen for me -

Just adding some more details:
In Youtube, with this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fvFeW8fgaw everything works fine, but with this other one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DcYQnqyrYM the screen gets black.
I ran "--reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface" and everything looks good.

It has a black screen on several sites like Google Maps, Youtube and some of the test links in this thread. But runs fine with the "--reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface"
I went into Catalyst Control Center and under "Power" then "Switchable Graphics" I set chrome.exe to "Power Saving" and everything seems to be working fine.

ch...@genesis-webdesign.com@ : There is no need to use Chrome on "Power Saving", which means that Chrome is not accelerated. With --reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface you can use Chrome in High Performance mode.

So, would using --reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface be the better way to go?

Comment 96 by levi...@gmail.com, Apr 12 2012

ch...@genesis-webdesign.com@ : Yes, and running Chrome with the better AMD GPU.

Even Microsoft's dxdiag gets confused recognizing video cards installed :

Display : Name = Intel(R) HD Graphics Family, Manufacturer = Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. !!!

Okay for me (HP Pavillion dv7... with Radeon HD 6770 / and Intel Graphics Control) without the possibility to install Catalyst. (I dont know which Graphics card is used) But since 18.0.1025.152 I got these black-screen probleme on "canvas containing" pages.

--reduce-gpu-sandbox --disable-image-transport-surface

I need exactly these two option no more no less to work.

works fine but can't be the solution, or am i wrong?

Hope it will be fixed soon, as I love the chrome ;)

The same Diag here: perhaps thats the problem

Name: Intel HD
Manufacture: ATI ????

@ARM, @levilan, that's part of the problem in that we're detecting the card incorrectly, but that isn't what's causing the black screens -- there's a bug in the Catalyst drivers that prevents some DirectX features from working right. We've contacted AMD and are working on a long-term solution, but in the meantime we're going to run --reduce-gpu-sandbox and --disable-image-transport-surface for *all* AMD GPUs. This will be fixed (again) in the next stable push; we had to temporarily revert the fix in the most recent push because of an (unrelated) emergency security bug (we rolled back a bunch of changes, this among them).

We apologize for the mess, but again things should be better as soon as the next Chrome stable update occurs.
Issue 123144 has been merged into this issue.
Tried to Verify the issue using 18.0.1025.162 in Samsung System - Win 7/64 Bit
Steps Followed :
=============
1. Chrome://flags
2. Enable ->GPU Compositing all pages
3. Enable -> GPU accelerated SVG & CSS
4. Control Panel -> Graphics & Media -> 3D - > Quality Set to - High
4. Visited GPU sites & Normal websites
   1. cnn.com
   2. http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/Default.html
   3. Played HTML 5 Video from youtube.com
   4. http://webkit.org/blog-files/3d-transforms/poster-circle.html
   5. http://www.chromeexperiments.com/detail/tunneltilt/?f=webgl

5. All websites rendered normally.

Have a Question:
Do I need to enable the Hybrid Graphic Functionality in the Bios Level ?

Hybrid Graphics should already be enabled in the BIOS (I don't know if it's possible to disable this there). You do need to make sure Chrome is running on the discrete GPU by right clicking on the Desktop, choosing "Configure Switchable Graphics", and ensuring that chrome.exe is set on "High Performance". See comment #12.
Went to Catalyst Control Center & made Chrome.exe to " High Performance" and Followed the steps mentioned in comment #102. and confirmed that no black screen & all URLs are rendered normally.

Status: Fixed

ARMistic@ : CCC should have been pre-installed on your HP Pavillion dv7, if not, you can install the application.

Anantha/Dharani-- can we get someone from QA to re-verify this issue? Now that we don't blacklist as aggressively we need to ensure that the code works on AMD systems that both were and were not originally affected by the "black GPU content" bug.

Geetha:

could you verify on various AMD systems make sure there is no black screen in GPU content page.
Specifically please make sure to cover both a system that didn't have the
problem earlier and one that did (we have a Samsung machine in-house that
did exhibit the problem earlier). Thanks!

I have verified this on both the samsung machines which we have in-house and this is working fine on Canary build - 22.0.1212.0 (Official Build 147620)
Samsung S Series Laptop --> AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series
Sansung --> Intel(R) HD Graphics Family

The Catalyst Control center shown on the "S" series laptop which has the GPU AMD Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series looks different and guessing that High performance is used by all the applications. PLease find the attached screen shot.

Steps Followed:
1. Launch Chrome with GPU Accelerated SVG Filters & GPU compositing on all pages flags enabled.
2. Make sure the GPU performance is set to High in Catalyst Control Center for Chrome.
3. Run the following URL's
